Scripture Mastery – 4 Nephi 1:1-4

Read scripture in context:

Jesus Christ visits the people on the American continent after His resurrection. This chapter follows the Savior's visit to the Nephites.

Scripture to Memorize:

And it came to pass that the thirty and fourth year passed away, and also the thirty and fifth, and behold the disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about. And as many as did come unto them and did truly repent of their sins were baptized in the name of Jesus, and they did also receive the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them and every man did deal justly one with another and they had all things common among them. Therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free and partakers of the heavenly gift. 4 Nephi 1:1-4

The Meaning of Words:

Formed: Made; shaped; molded; planned; arranged; combined; enacted; constituted.

Questions to Discuss:

What are we to behold or look at? How did the disciples of Jesus form a church of Christ? Why did the people come to the disciples to be baptized? What does it mean to be baptized in the name of Jesus? Who was given power to give the gift of the Holy Ghost? What affect does the Holy Ghost have upon the people? How long did it take until all the people were all converted unto the Lord? What is the process the people go through to be made free and partakers of the Heavenly Gift?

Marking the Scripture:

  • Highlight: And it came to pass, behold, and Therefore in blue.
  • Highlight what the disciples of Jesus did in green.
  • Highlight the things the people did. in turquoise
  • Highlight the stages of conversion unto the Lord in pink.
  • Highlight the result of true conversion in orange.

Scripture Mastery – Alma 13 Sentences 75-81

Read scripture in context:

Alma teaches the Zoramites who have been humbled because of the poverty. He teaches them how to have faith in the word of God.

Scripture to Memorize:

Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe. Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it. And now, how much more cursed is he that knoweth the will of God and doeth it not, than he that only believeth, or only hath cause to believe, and falleth into transgression? Now of this thing ye must judge. Behold, I say unto you, that it is on the one hand even as it is on the other; and it shall be unto every man according to his work. And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true. Alma 13 Sentences 75-81

The Meaning of Words:

Sign: A token; something by which another thing is shown or represented; any visible thing, any motion, appearance or event which indicates the existence or approach of something else. A wonder; a miracle; a prodigy; a remarkable transaction, event or phenomenon. Some visible transaction, event or appearance intended as proof or evidence of something else; hence; proof; evidence by sight.

Surety: Foundation of stability; support. Evidence; ratification; confirmation.

Cause: The reason or motive that urges, moves, or impels the mind to act or decide.

Perfect: Finished; complete; Fully informed; Manifesting perfection. To instruct fully.

Hope: Confidence in a future event; the highest degree of well founded expectation of good; That which gives hope; he or that which furnishes ground of expectation, or promises desired good.

Questions to Discuss:

Why don't signs produce faith? Why does a wicked and adulterous generation seek after a sign? Why will the wicked only believe what they can experience with their five senses? Faith works by mental exertion and words. Can I work by faith if I will only believe what has already been manifested by another being's faith? Why am I more cursed if I know the will of God and don't do it than if I only believe? What must I judge? What is on the one hand even as it is on the other? What does Alma mean “ it shall be unto every man according to his work”? Why must I work by faith instead of requiring others to work by faith in my behalf? How are the sign seekers handicapped? Signs shall follow them that believe (Mormon 9:24). Do signs produce faith or are the result of faith? Belief leads to faith which leads to knowledge. How are we condemned when we want to take the last step before the first step? What am I hoping for? How do I know what is true? Why do I need to have faith to have hope and have hope to have faith? How do these two work together? “Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope.”

Marking the Scripture:
  1. There is a pattern that helps me remember this verse. “Now. . . Behold, I say unto you . . . And Now”. Then the pattern repeats itself. Highlight this in pink.
  2. Belief leads to faith which leads to knowledge. Underline all three of these words in blue.
  3. The “if”, “then”, “therefore”, and “for” show cause and effect. Highlight all these words in green.
  4. Highlight the first few words of the scripture in purple. It is important to remember how the scripture begins. I'm memorizing many scriptures simultaneously, so I practice recalling the first few words in each of the scriptures that I master. If I can get started, I can usually recall the entire passage.
Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe. Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it. And now as I said concerning faithfaith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true. Alma 13 Sentences 75-81

Scripture Mastery – Alma 13 Sentences 114-117

Read scripture in context:

Alma teaches those who have been cast out of the synagogues how to exercise faith.

Scripture to Memorize:

But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life. And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst. Then, my brethren, ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you. Alma 13 Sentences 114-117

The Meaning of Words:

  • Root: That part of a plant which enters and fixes itself in the earth, and serves to support the plant in an erect position, while by means of its fibrils it imbibes nutriment for the stem, branches and fruit. The original or cause of any thing. Means of growth. To be firmly fixed; to be established. To plant deeply; to impress deeply and durably.
  • Springing: Growth; increase.
  • Everlasting: Perpetual; continuing indefinitely, or during the present state of things.
  • Nourishing: Feeding; supplying with aliment; supporting with food. Promoting growth.
  • Feast: Something delicious and entertaining to the mind or soul. That which delights and entertains.
  • Long-suffering: Long endurance; patience of offense.

Questions to Discuss:

Why do we need to look forward to the fruit to exercise faith? What mental exertion is required of us? Why is diligence, patience, long-suffering, and looking forward to the fruit all necessary when nourishing faith? What will it look like when I see the tree springing up unto everlasting life? What does feasting on this fruit feel like? What do the delicious fruits of eternal life taste like? Why am I hungry and thirsty until I eat of this fruit? What does it feel like to be hungry and thirsty? Why do I need to keep the expectation in front of me while I wait for the fruit? If I forget about what I am nourishing, what will happen to the fruit? How long does it take a tree to grow to maturity?

Marking the Scripture:
  1. In blue, highlight the things I must do to nourish my faith.
  2. In pink, highlight the things the tree will do.
  3. In yellow, highlight the rewards I receive when I exercise faith.
  4. In green, highlight the words that describe the fruit.

Scripture Mastery – Alma 32:28

Read scripture in context:

Alma and Amulek have success among the Zoramites who are poor. He teaches them they don't need a synagogue to worship the Lord and teaches them how faith is developed.

Scripture to Memorize:

Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me. Alma 32:28

The Meaning of Words:

true: Conformable to fact; being in accordance with the actual state of things; Genuine; pure; real; not counterfeit, adulterated or false;
resist: Literally, to stand against; to withstand; hence, to act in opposition; to strive against; to endeavor to counteract, defeat or frustrate.
swell: become or make greater in intensity, number, amount, or volume; be intensely affected or filled with a particular emotion.
motion: the action or process of moving or being moved.
enlarge: To dilate; to expand; as with joy or love. To expand; to make more comprehensive.  To increase in appearance; to magnify to the eye;  To set at liberty; to release from confinement or pressure.
enlighten: To make light; to shed light on; to supply with light; to illuminate; as, the sun enlightens the earth. To quicken in the faculty of vision; to enable to see more clearly. To give light to; to give clearer views; to illuminate; to instruct; to enable to see or comprehend truth; as, to enlighten the mind or understanding. To illuminate with divine knowledge, or a knowledge of the truth.

Questions to Discuss:

Why do prophets often use the things found in nature to describe the things of the spirit? Why must the Word be planted in my heart? Why must the soil or the heart be soft in order to receive the Word? Where else in the soul could the Word be planted? What is unbelief? How do I cast the Word out by my unbelief? How do I resist the Spirit of the Lord? Why do I resist the Spirit of the Lord? What does it feel like when the Word swells within my breast? How is the soul enlarged? Is this joy or love that is felt in my heart? How does the Word enlighten my understanding? Is this pure intelligence that comes from the Holy Ghost? When something is delicious, do I want more of it? Do I hunger and thirst after righteousness because it is delicious? How does Alma use the physical senses to help me understand the workings of the Spirit of God?

Marking the Scripture:
  1. Underline all the “begin/beginneth”. How is planting the seed of faith a new beginning?
  2. Highlight the references to seed in green.
  3. Highlight what not to do in pink.
  4. Highlight in blue the references to word and the effects of the Word.
  5. Highligh behold in yellow.

Scripture Mastery – 3 Nephi 11:13-17

Read Scripture in Context:

After his resurrection, Jesus shows himself to the Nephites.

Scripture to Memorize:

And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto them saying: Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the God of Israel, and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world. And it came to pass that the multitude went forth, and thrust their hands into his side, and did feel the prints of the nails in his hands and in his feet; and this they did do, going forth one by one until they had all gone forth, and did see with their eyes and did feel with their hands, and did know of a surety and did bear record, that it was he, of whom it was written by the prophets, that should come. And when they had all gone forth and had witnessed for themselves, they did cry out with one accord, saying: Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God! And they did fall down at the feet of Jesus, and did worship him. 3 Nephi 11:13-17

The Meaning of Words:

thrust: To enter by pushing; to squeeze in.

know: To perceive with certainty; to understand clearly; to have a clear and certain perception of truth, fact, or any thing that actually exists. To know a thing pre includes all doubt or uncertainty of its existence. To be informed of; to be taught. It is not unusual for us to say we know things from information, when we rely on the veracity of the informer.

surety: Evidence; ratification; confirmation.

witnessed: Seen in person; testified; subscribed by persons present

accord: Agreement; harmony of minds; consent or concurrence of opinions or wills.

hosanna: [Heb. save, I beseech you.] An exclamation of praise to God, or an invocation of blessings.

Questions to Discuss:

“And it came to pass that the king put forth his hand to raise them, as was the custom with the Lamanites, as a token of peace, which custom they had taken from the Nephites.” (Alma 47:23) Where did this custom come from? What are signs and tokens? Why does the Lord command them to come and feel and see? What did they do when they thrust their hands into Jesus' side? Why did Jesus have them thrust their hands into his side and feel the prints of the nails in his hands and feet? Why is it important to have this knowledge? How would this prove he was the God of Israel? How would this prove he was the God of the whole earth? How would this prove he had been slain for the sins of the world? Why didn't they go forth as a group? Why did this need to be done one by one? How did seeing with their eyes and feeling with their hands give them a sure knowledge that it was he of whom it was written by the prophets that should come? Who can be a witness of Jesus Christ? What does it mean to bear record (definitions listed in last week's scripture mastery)? When they cry out Hosanna, what are they asking Jesus Christ to do? What does it mean to cry out with one accord? Who is the Most High God? What does “Blessed be the name of the Most High God” mean? Who do they worship?

Marking the Scripture:
  1. Highlight each “And it came to pass that”
  2. After the first “And it came to pass that” the Lord gives instructions. After the second “And it came to pass that” the multitude obeys. Highlight the Lord's command in connection with the fulfillment of the command.
  3. Their witness of Jesus Christ started on the ground and ended on the ground. Underline where they are asked to arise and were they fall down and worship Him.

Scripture Mastery – 3 Nephi 11:31-41

Read scripture in context:

After his resurrection, Jesus shows himself to the Nephites. They come forth one by one and touch and see Him. Jesus gives authority to baptize and teaches how this is to be done. There is to be no contention concerning the points of His doctrine. Jesus Christ declares his doctrine.

Scripture to Memorize:

Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, I will declare unto you my doctrine. And this is my doctrine, and it is the doctrine which the Father hath given unto me; and I bear record of the Father, and the Father beareth record of me, and the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and I bear record that the Father commandeth all men, everywhere, to repent and believe in me. And whoso believeth in me, and is baptized, the same shall be saved; and they are they who shall inherit the kingdom of God. And whoso believeth not in me, and is not baptized, shall be damned. Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and I bear record of it from the Father; and whoso believeth in me believeth in the Father also; and unto him will the Father bear record of me, for he will visit him with fire and with the Holy Ghost. And thus will the Father bear record of me, and the Holy Ghost will bear record unto him of the Father and me; for the Father, and I, and the Holy Ghost are one. And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and become as a little child, and be baptized in my name, or ye can in nowise receive these things. And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and be baptized in my name, and become as a little child, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God. Verily, verily, I say unto you, that this is my doctrine, and whoso buildeth upon this buildeth upon my rock, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against them. And whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil, and is not built upon my rock; but he buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of hell stand open to receive such when the floods come and the winds beat upon them. Therefore, go forth unto this people, and declare the words which I have spoken, unto the ends of the earth. 3 Nephi 11:31-41

The Meaning of Words:

doctrine: whatever is laid down as true by an instructor or master.
bear:  To show or exhibit; to relate; to carry, to convey; to withstand something difficult or painful, to support or hold up; sustain, cause to be born, bring forth, provide evidence for.
record:  To cause to be remembered; an authentic account of any facts and proceedings
damned: sentenced to everlasting punishment in a future state; condemned
declare: To make known; to tell explicitly; to manifest or communicate plainly to others by words. To publish; to proclaim.
establish: To enact or decree by authority and for permanence; to ordain; to appoint;

Questions to Discuss:

Why does Jesus say this is His doctrine, when it is the doctrine the Father hath given unto Him? What are the three things Jesus asks us to repent and do? Why does he bear record of the Father and the Father bears record of Him, but they don't bear record of the Holy Ghost? What is the Father's commandment to all men? What is required to be saved? Who will inherit the kingdom of God? What does it mean to be damned? How important is baptism? If we believe in Jesus, who will we also believe in? How will the Father bear record of Jesus? How will the Father visit those who believe in Jesus? What does it mean “the Father, and I, and the Holy Ghost are one”? How does the Holy Ghost bear record of Jesus and the Father? How do we become as a little child? What are the gates of hell? What is the difference between building upon a sandy foundation and building upon a rock? When are the gates of hell open to receive those who do not believe in Christ, have not been baptized, and are not as a little child? What are we asked to do with this doctrine? How have we added to and taken away from the doctrine of Christ? How have we made the doctrine of Christ complicated?

Marking the Scripture:

You can use a different color to mark each item.
  1. This is a long passage and can be divided into three section. Each section begins with verily, verily.
  2. Highlight the six phrases that have the word “doctrine” in it.
  3. Highlight the eight phrases that have the word “bear/beareth record” in it.
  4. Highlight the three phrases that have the word “repent” in it. Notice in the second and third phrases the order of become as a little child and be baptized have been switched. What does this mean?
  5. It starts with Behold and ends with Therefore. What does Jesus want us to see? What does he want us to do with His doctrine?
  6. Highlight all “believe, believeth, believeth not”. How important is this?
  7. Highlight the words having to do with construction & weather, “buildeth, my rock, gates of hell, sandy foundation, floods, winds”. What do these symbols mean?

Scripture Mastery – Ether 3:18-20

The scripture mastery for the week comes this Ether 3.

Read scripture in context:

This verse is read right before these verses letting us know we are getting a shortened version of the story. "And now, as I, Moroni, said I could not make a full account of these things which are written, therefore it sufficeth me to say that Jesus showed himself unto this man in the spirit, even after the manner and in the likeness of the same body even as he showed himself unto the Nephites."  Ether 3:17

Scripture to Memorize:

And he ministered unto him even as he ministered unto the Nephites; and all this, that this man might know that he was God, because of the many great works which the Lord had showed unto him. And because of the knowledge of this man he could not be kept from beholding within the veil; and he saw the finger of Jesus, which, when he saw, he fell with fear; for he knew that it was the finger of the Lord; and he had faith no longer, for he knew, nothing doubting. Wherefore, having this perfect knowledge of God, he could not be kept from within the veil; therefore he saw Jesus; and he did minister unto him. Ether 3:18-20

The Meaning of Words:

  • within: inside (something).
  • behold: see or observe (a thing or person, especially a remarkable or impressive one)
  • minister: attend to the needs of (someone).
  • works: activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.

Questions to Discuss:

How did Jesus minister unto the Nephites? What did that look like? Why does the brother of Jared know Jesus is God after being ministered to in this manner? What did Jesus show him? What did the brother of Jared know which allowed him to behold within the veil? What did he know, nothing doubting? Why did a perfect knowledge of God give him access into the veil? Where did the brother of Jared see Jesus? Where did Jesus minister unto him? When did the brother of Jared's faith turn into knowledge?

Marking the Scripture:

  • Underline in one color ministered & minister
  • Underline in another color know, knowledge, & knew
  • Circle these connective words in another color: and all this that this, because of , and because of, which when, and he had , wherefore, therefore
  • Underline in another color the things Jesus showed the brother of Jared

Scripture Mastery - Alma 17:10-11

This scripture mastery comes from the chapter we've been studying for the past two weeks.

Read scripture in context:

The sons of Mosiah did not even know if it were possible to be successful in the mission they had undertaken. “And it came to pass that they journeyed many days in the wilderness, and they fasted much and prayed much that the Lord would grant unto them a portion of his Spirit to go with them, and abide with them, that they might be an instrument in the hands of God to bring, if it were possible, their brethren, the Lamanites, to the knowledge of the truth, to the knowledge of the baseness of the traditions of their fathers, which were not correct.”

It was in these circumstances the Lord did visit them with his Spirit.

Scripture to Memorize:

And it came to pass that the Lord did visit them with his Spirit, and said unto them: Be comforted. And they were comforted. And the Lord said unto them also: Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls. Alma 17:10-11

Questions to Discuss:

Why did the sons of Mosiah need comfort? What did the Lord do to comfort them? How were they visited? What were the sons of Mosiah asked to do? Why is it necessary to be patient in long-suffering and afflictions? What was the promise of the Lord? Why did this promise comfort them? Why can we have faith in the promises of the Lord?

Scripture Mastery - Alma 17:2-3

Every Sunday we'll introduce a new scripture the family can study and master throughout the week. This scripture mastery comes from the chapter we've been studying during the week.

Read scripture in context.

In Alma 17:1, the sons of Mosiah meet up with Alma, “And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla.”

It's been a long time since they've seen each other. In verse four we learn these friends have been separated for fourteen years. “And they had been teaching the word of God for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites, having had much success in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth; yea, by the power of their words many were brought before the altar of God, to call on his name and confess their sins before him.”

The sons of Mosiah proceed to share with Alma the experiences they've been having. Alma chapters 17-27 is the account the sons of Mosiah give Alma of their ministry among the Lamanites.

Scripture to Memorize:

Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God. But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God. Alma 17:2-3

Questions to Discuss:

What is the back story to this verse? Why did an angel come to the sons of Mosiah and Alma? Once someone is converted unto the Lord do they always remain converted unto the Lord? Why is Alma rejoicing? Who is the truth? What does it mean to know the truth? What motivated these sons to search the scriptures?  How did they become men of a sound understanding? What were their sacrifices? What is the spirit of prophecy and revelation? What does it mean to teach with power and authority of God?

Marking the Scripture:
  • Underline the things the sons of Mosiah did to prepare in one color.
  • Underline the gifts and abilities the sons of Mosiah obtained in another color.

The Meaning of Words: circle these words in another color
  • exceedingly: to an extreme degree
  • waxed: To increase in size; to grow; to become larger; To pass from one state to another
  • sound: Founded in truth; firm; strong; valid; solid; that cannot be overthrown or refuted; right; correct; well founded; free form error
  • diligently: With steady application and care; with industry or assiduity; not carelessly; not negligently.
