Scripture Mastery - Alma 17:10-11

This scripture mastery comes from the chapter we've been studying for the past two weeks.

Read scripture in context:

The sons of Mosiah did not even know if it were possible to be successful in the mission they had undertaken. “And it came to pass that they journeyed many days in the wilderness, and they fasted much and prayed much that the Lord would grant unto them a portion of his Spirit to go with them, and abide with them, that they might be an instrument in the hands of God to bring, if it were possible, their brethren, the Lamanites, to the knowledge of the truth, to the knowledge of the baseness of the traditions of their fathers, which were not correct.”

It was in these circumstances the Lord did visit them with his Spirit.

Scripture to Memorize:

And it came to pass that the Lord did visit them with his Spirit, and said unto them: Be comforted. And they were comforted. And the Lord said unto them also: Go forth among the Lamanites, thy brethren, and establish my word; yet ye shall be patient in long-suffering and afflictions, that ye may show forth good examples unto them in me, and I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls. Alma 17:10-11

Questions to Discuss:

Why did the sons of Mosiah need comfort? What did the Lord do to comfort them? How were they visited? What were the sons of Mosiah asked to do? Why is it necessary to be patient in long-suffering and afflictions? What was the promise of the Lord? Why did this promise comfort them? Why can we have faith in the promises of the Lord?

Marking the Scripture:

  • Underline the action required by the sons of Mosiah in one color.
  • Underline the promise of the Lord in another color.

The Meaning of Words:

  • comfort: to give strength and hope to; cheer; to ease the grief or trouble of
  • establish: to put into a favorable position, to gain full recognition or acceptance of, to put beyond doubt
  • affliction: the cause of persistent pain or distress, great suffering
  • instrument: a means whereby something is achieved, performed, or furthered. one used by another as a means or aid
  • salvation: deliverance from the power and effects of sin

Other Helpful Hints are listed at the end of the post - Remember and Hear God's Voice

Scrapbook Copy of Scripture:

After the children memorize the verse, they can put this colored copy in their Book of Mormon scrapbook. The sheep and pool of water are there to help them remember this scripture is found in the same chapter where Ammon protects King Lamoni's sheep at the Waters of Sebus.

If they want to memorize it for life, here is a chart to keep track of their progress. You can use this colored copy or use the simple copy posted at the end of the Memorize For Life  post.

Here is a simpler version if you only want to memorize one verse.

Book of Mormon Trivia - Alma 17

With preteen children, we want to help them get familiar with the stories in the Book of Mormon by doing a variety of activities. My children love to play games with me, so we're going to make scripture study into a game.

Book of Mormon Trivia is a fun way to read the scriptures. You can read these questions in order, or you can mix up the questions. Start by keeping the questions in order. Once the children know the story, you can mix up the questions and combine questions from different Book of Mormon chapters.

I included the scripture reference so they know the context of the question. When they see the answer is in Alma chapter 17, they should know this chapter's basic story line. If they don't know the answer to a question, have them look it up; then have them read the verse aloud. This will help them in their ability to read and comprehend the Book of Mormon. We want them to have fun and not stress because they don't know an answer. When they're ready for the challenge of knowing the answers by memory, we can incorporate that into the game.

You can play a game using these questions, or you can use questions your family creates. Next week I'll post a few different games you can play, or have fun creating your own game.

Creating the questions and game might be interesting for one of your older children. It all depends on the child. Ideas that work for one child might not work for another child. That's okay. We are sharing a variety of ideas to help get you thinking of the many different ways you can study the scriptures.

Teaching the Book of Mormon to Teenagers – Alma 17:1-6

We have children from ages three to twenty-one living in our home. We do different things with the younger children than we do with the older children. Most of the teenagers and young adults know the stories of the Book of Mormon. They are most interested in understanding the truth, seeing the patterns of God, and learning to apply these principles in their life. They are interested in the outcome of living God's laws.

We constantly shift and change things to fit our family's schedule, but what works for us right now is to get up and have family scripture study from 5:00-5:30 a.m. Kids start leaving the home at 5:30 a.m., and all of them are finally home again at 9:30 p.m.

Morning scripture study is not required. If they want to come, they need to set an alarm and show up. All of our children are not interested in studying the scriptures. We have found it is not fun to have children at family scripture study who don't want to be there, so they sleep while the interested ones make the effort to come. The little children are also asleep at this time and not making noise.

While everyone is gathering, we pass off the scriptures we've been memorizing. Most of us are following the Memorize For Life formula, so we always have something to pass off. This just takes a couple minutes each day.

Our teenagers aren't interested in creating a Book of Mormon scrapbook like the little children. Instead, each one has a simple spiral notebook where they can take notes, ask questions, and write down other helpful references. Sometimes we study by chapter, sometimes we study by topic. This week we are studying Alma 17. We usually only get through two to three verses a day, but I find myself learning new things every day.

We ask a lot of questions. It doesn't matter if we have answers to all of the questions; we still write them down. We get to think about our questions during the day and listen to the voice of God as He teaches us and gives us greater understanding. This process requires us to ask, seek, and knock.

Here are a some of the things we talked about on Monday and Tuesday.

1 And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla.
2 Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.
3 But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God. Alma 17

What's the purpose of fasting? Why do we fast? What is fasting? Fasting sometimes means going without food and water, but is this its only meaning? “Verily, this is fasting and prayer, or in other words, rejoicing and prayer.”D&C 50:14 Could fasting also mean rejoicing? Does it have other meanings?

One of our daughters asked if there is a connection between the way we eat, fasting, and receiving knowledge. She read us this scripture from the word of wisdom, “And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;” D&C 89:18-19

We would like to take more time to study fasting and increase our understanding of how to fast in a way that brings results. We put this on the list of topics we would like to study.

What's the pattern we see in Alma 17:1-2? What is the key to receiving the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation? What is the key to teaching with the power and authority of God? What kind of labor is required to receive these spiritual gifts? What does teaching with power and authority of God look like? When we use God's words correctly, does he authorize and give power to those words because they are His words? Is this why having a sound understand of the word of God is important before we can teach with power and authority of God?

4And they had been teaching the word of God for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites, having had much success in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth; yea, by the power of their words many were brought before the altar of God, to call on his name and confess their sins before him. Alma 17

What is the altar of God? Is this an ordinance?

What does it mean to have a knowledge of the truth? Who is the truth? “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6

What does it mean to have knowledge of Jesus? What is the difference between faith and knowledge? “And because of the knowledge of this man he could not be kept from beholding within the veil; and he saw the finger of Jesus, which, when he saw, he fell with fear; for he knew that it was the finger of the Lord; and he had faith no longer, for he knew, nothing doubting.” Ether 3:19

5 Now these are the circumstances which attended them in their journeyings, for they had many afflictions; they did suffer much, both in body and in mind, such as hunger, thirst and fatigue, and also much labor in the spirit. Alma 17

How do we labor in the spirit? What sacrifices do we make in our relationship with God? Do we make sacrifices so we can be more effective servants?

One of our sons has been reading The Second Comforter and our discussion reminded him of these words.

Doing the Lord's everyday work is more important than it may seem at times . . . How the Lord finds you spending your time is important to whether He can visit with you or not . . . The right kind of life puts you in the right place at the right time to receive the Second Comforter

6 Now these were their journeyings: Having taken leave of their father, Mosiah, in the first year of the judges; having refused the kingdom which their father was desirous to confer upon them, and also this was the minds of the people; Alma 17

These sons of Mosiah gave up ruling the kingdom of the Nephites to be servants among the Lamanites. Which one would we prefer? Do we want to be a king or a servant? What did Ammon know of our Lord that most do not?

And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Luke 22:24-27

We would love to hear what you've learned from these verses. What questions, thoughts, and insights do you have to share? Feel free to leave a comment!

Picture Scripture Chase – Alma 17

We've already learned the books in the Book of Mormon. Now we'll focus on what is found in each chapter. This will take time, but eventually the children will know what happens in every chapter of the Book of Mormon. You'll read a verse to them from anywhere in the book, and they will be able to find where the verse is found.

After learning the story of Ammon protecting King Lamoni's flocks at the Waters of Sebus, we gave them this picture to color. On the back side of the picture are the words found in Alma 17:19-39.

When we add another picture from a different story, You'll read a verse off the back of one of the pictures. The children will turn to the picture that goes along with the verse. This gets really fun as more and more scripture stories are added to their scrapbook. It's a picture scripture chase.

When they find the correct picture, tell them the chapter and verses that go along with the picture. Eventually they will be telling you the chapters and verses.

Scripture Mastery - Alma 17:2-3

Every Sunday we'll introduce a new scripture the family can study and master throughout the week. This scripture mastery comes from the chapter we've been studying during the week.

Read scripture in context.

In Alma 17:1, the sons of Mosiah meet up with Alma, “And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla.”

It's been a long time since they've seen each other. In verse four we learn these friends have been separated for fourteen years. “And they had been teaching the word of God for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites, having had much success in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth; yea, by the power of their words many were brought before the altar of God, to call on his name and confess their sins before him.”

The sons of Mosiah proceed to share with Alma the experiences they've been having. Alma chapters 17-27 is the account the sons of Mosiah give Alma of their ministry among the Lamanites.

Scripture to Memorize:

Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God. But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God. Alma 17:2-3

Questions to Discuss:

What is the back story to this verse? Why did an angel come to the sons of Mosiah and Alma? Once someone is converted unto the Lord do they always remain converted unto the Lord? Why is Alma rejoicing? Who is the truth? What does it mean to know the truth? What motivated these sons to search the scriptures?  How did they become men of a sound understanding? What were their sacrifices? What is the spirit of prophecy and revelation? What does it mean to teach with power and authority of God?

Marking the Scripture:
  • Underline the things the sons of Mosiah did to prepare in one color.
  • Underline the gifts and abilities the sons of Mosiah obtained in another color.

The Meaning of Words: circle these words in another color
  • exceedingly: to an extreme degree
  • waxed: To increase in size; to grow; to become larger; To pass from one state to another
  • sound: Founded in truth; firm; strong; valid; solid; that cannot be overthrown or refuted; right; correct; well founded; free form error
  • diligently: With steady application and care; with industry or assiduity; not carelessly; not negligently.

Other Helpful Hints are listed at the end of this post - Remember and Hear God's Voice
