Where did Alma and Amulek go to preach the word of God to the people?

And it came to pass that they did go forth, and began to preach the word of God unto the people, entering into their synagogues, and into their houses; yea, and even they did preach the word in their streets.

Among which people did they begin to have success in peaching the word of God? Why were the poor people cast out of the synagogues? What did the rich Zoramites think of the poor Zoramites? In what two ways were they poor?

And it came to pass that after much labor among them, they began to have success among the poor class of people; for behold, they were cast out of the synagogues because of the coarseness of their apparel—

Therefore they were not permitted to enter into their synagogues to worship God, being esteemed as filthiness; therefore they were poor; yea, they were esteemed by their brethren as dross; therefore they were poor as to things of the world; and also they were poor in heart.

Where was Alma speaking to the people? Who came to talk to Alma?

Now, as Alma was teaching and speaking unto the people upon the hill Onidah, there came a great multitude unto him, who were those of whom we have been speaking, of whom were poor in heart, because of their poverty as to the things of the world.

Who spoke to Alma for the group? What did this man ask Alma? What was he worried about? Who built the synagogues? Why were these people cast out of the synagogues?

And they came unto Alma; and the one who was the foremost among them said unto him: Behold, what shall these my brethren do, for they are despised of all men because of their poverty, yea, and more especially by our priests; for they have cast us out of our synagogues which we have labored abundantly to build with our own hands; and they have cast us out because of our exceeding poverty; and we have no place to worship our God; and behold, what shall we do?

Why was Alma filled with joy? Why were these people humble and prepared to hear the word of God?

And now when Alma heard this, he turned him about, his face immediately towards him, and he beheld with great joy; for he beheld that their afflictions had truly humbled them, and that they were in a preparation to hear the word.

What did Alma do with the other multitude? What did Alma do with his hand? Who did Alma cry to?

Therefore he did say no more to the other multitude; but he stretched forth his hand, and cried unto those whom he beheld, who were truly penitent, and said unto them:

What did Alma see in these people?

I behold that ye are lowly in heart; and if so, blessed are ye.

Behold thy brother hath said, What shall we do?—for we are cast out of our synagogues, that we cannot worship our God.

Why was it a good thing that they were compelled to be humble? If you repent, what will you find? What will happen to those who endure to the end?

And now, because ye are compelled to be humble blessed are ye; for a man sometimes, if he is compelled to be humble, seeketh repentance; and now surely, whosoever repenteth shall find mercy; and he that findeth mercy and endureth to the end the same shall be saved.

People can be compelled to be humble, what is another reason to be humble?

And now, as I said unto you, that because ye were compelled to be humble ye were blessed, do ye not suppose that they are more blessed who truly humble themselves because of the word?

What three things must you do to be blessed? Is it better to be compelled to be humble or to humble yourself because of the word?

Yea, he that truly humbleth himself, and repenteth of his sins, and endureth to the end, the same shall be blessed—yea, much more blessed than they who are compelled to be humble because of their exceeding poverty.

If you are humble, what will you do?

Therefore, blessed are they who humble themselves without being compelled to be humble; or rather, in other words, blessed is he that believeth in the word of God, and is baptized without stubbornness of heart, yea, without being brought to know the word, or even compelled to know, before they will believe.

What do some people want before they will believe?

Yea, there are many who do say: If thou wilt show unto us a sign from heaven, then we shall know of a surety; then we shall believe.

Can you have faith if you already know it?

Now I ask, is this faith? Behold, I say unto you, Nay; for if a man knoweth a thing he hath no cause to believe, for he knoweth it.

Who will be more cursed, he that knoweth the will and God and does not do it or he that only believes the word of God and does not do it?

And now, how much more cursed is he that knoweth the will of God and doeth it not, than he that only believeth, or only hath cause to believe, and falleth into transgression?

What must you judge?

Now of this thing ye must judge. Behold, I say unto you, that it is on the one hand even as it is on the other; and it shall be unto every man according to his work.

What is faith? Is faith to have a perfect knowledge of things?

And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

Who is God merciful to? What's the first thing you need to do to begin to exercise faith?

And now, behold, I say unto you, and I would that ye should remember, that God is merciful unto all who believe on his name; therefore he desireth, in the first place, that ye should believe, yea, even on his word.

How does God give His word to men, women, and children? What do little children have given unto them many times?

And now, he imparteth his word by angels unto men, yea, not only men but women also. Now this is not all; little children do have words given unto them many times, which confound the wise and the learned.

Why did the people not know what to do?

And now, my beloved brethren, as ye have desired to know of me what ye shall do because ye are afflicted and cast out—now I do not desire that ye should suppose that I mean to judge you only according to that which is true—

Were all of the people compelled to be humble because of their poverty?

For I do not mean that ye all of you have been compelled to humble yourselves; for I verily believe that there are some among you who would humble themselves, let them be in whatsoever circumstances they might.

Can you know for sure when you start to have faith in a truth?

Now, as I said concerning faith—that it was not a perfect knowledge—even so it is with my words. Ye cannot know of their surety at first, unto perfection, any more than faith is a perfect knowledge.

What does Alma ask the people to experiment upon? If you do not have faith, what can you start with?

But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words.

What is Alma comparing the word to? Where should this seed be planted? How can you throw away the seed? How can you know the word is true?

Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me.

How does faith increased?

Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge.

How can you know if a seed is good?

But behold, as the seed swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, will not this strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow.

Can you know for sure that a seed is good? How?

And now, behold, are ye sure that this is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own likeness.

If the seed is good, what does it mean? If it doesn't grow in good conditions, what does that say about the seed?

Therefore, if a seed groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore it is cast away.

Can you know if a seed is good, if you don't experiment on the word?

And now, behold, because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed, and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed is good.

When you know the seed is good, what do you have perfect knowledge of?

And now, behold, is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand.

What are three descriptive words for light?

O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is light; and whatsoever is light, is good, because it is discernible, therefore ye must know that it is good; and now behold, after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect?

What is the first thing you need to do when you begin to exercise faith?

Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed was good.

What do you need to do as the tree begins to grow?

And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit.

What will happen if you do not take good care of the tree?

But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out.

If a good seed is planted in barren ground, will it grow?

Now, this is not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof.

If you don't take care of the tree, can you ever eat the fruit of the tree?

And thus, if ye will not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life.

What will you receive if you take good care of the tree?

But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life.

What is the fruit of eternal life compared to?

And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst.

If you have faith, will you be rewarded?

Then, my brethren, ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you.

Book of Mormon Puzzler

The children love playing Book of Mormon Beanbag Toss, but we wanted to play another game to change things up a bit.

We love putting puzzles together. It's a relaxing pass time you can do with others or by yourself. We get most of our puzzles from the Dollar Store. They usually have a large selection of puzzles and they're only a dollar.

Materials: Book of Mormon, Book of Mormon Trivia Questions, & a 24 piece puzzle (We have several different puzzles the children can choose from.)

Object: Put the complete puzzle together

How to Play: Have a child read a verse from a Book of Mormon Trivia Chapter

Ask another child a Book of Mormon Trivia Question.

Alternate back and forth between children until all the questions have been answered for that verse.

Now its time for everyone to pick out puzzle pieces. The child reading the verse gets to reach their hand into the puzzle box and randomly pick out two pieces. For every question they answer correctly, they get two more puzzle pieces. If they ask for help with their question, they still get their two puzzle pieces. Anyone helping to answer a question also gets two pieces.

Have them lay their pieces out in from of them. They can start using their pieces to put the puzzle together.

Have another child read the next verse and continue playing the game until the puzzle is finished.

Variation #1: Using a 24 piece puzzle, lay out all the pieces before starting the game. The children get to choose which puzzle pieces they want. It is not a random selection.

Variation #2: Using a 100 piece puzzle, lay out all the pieces before starting the game. The children get to choose which puzzle pieces they want. It is not a random selection. Instead of giving them 2 pieces for reading a verse or answering a question, give them 4-8 pieces.

Scripture game time for this age is 15-30 minutes.

Book of Mormon Trivia – Ether 3

Seven year old Marianne and nine year old Joseph love to play Book of Mormon Trivia before school. Joseph said it is much more interesting than sitting down and listening. They are eager to set up the game and get started in the morning.

The purpose of the game is to help children become familiar with the stories in the Book of Mormon. We've been playing Book of Mormon Beanbag Toss along with these questions, and they love it.

Our children are being challenged when the questions are in order. But for a greater challenge, you can mix up the questions or combine the questions with those from other chapters.

Have the children read the verse aloud. This will help them in their ability to read scriptures. Then have them answer the question. They get game privileges for reading the verse and for answering questions.

Book of Mormon Beanbag Toss

We live in a competitive culture, but Zion is a society of cooperation. While studying the Book of Mormon we want to encourage cooperation instead of competition.

Book of Mormon Beanbag Toss

Ages: Elementary Children

Materials: beanbags, balls, or some other object you can throw; three baskets; Books of Mormon; questions to Book of Mormon Trivia; paper & pencil

Objective: As a family, earn 50 points during scripture game time

Setup: Place three baskets different distances from the throwing line. The closest basket is worth one point, the next basket is worth 2 points, and the farthest basket is worth 3 points. If your baskets are different sizes, the smallest basket is placed farthest from the throwing line.

How to Play:

• Level #1 Have a child read a verse from the Book of Mormon. Then Mom/Dad asks a question that goes along with verse. The child reading the verse has the first option to answer the question. If needed, they can ask another team player for help. If there is more than one question for the verse, have other team members answer the other questions.

• Now it's time to score. The child reading the verse gets 3 beanbags, and anyone who helps answer questions gets 3 beanbags. Everyone with beanbags goes to the throwing line and scores points for the family. They count up their points in the baskets and make tally marks on the score card for points scored.

• Continue playing until the family scores 50 points and then scripture game time is over.

• Level #2: After they have successfully played the game and are familiar with the questions & answers, have them answer the questions without reading the verses.

• Level #3: When the children are successful at level #2, mix up the order of the questions from the chapter.

• Level #4 When the children are successful at level #3, combine questions from different chapters. Always give them the chapter number, so they have context for the questions.

*Feel free to adjust the rules to fit your family. You may add or change questions to help your child see what is being asked or to give greater understanding to a verse.

Our teenagers go to school 1 ½ hours before our elementary children. We play scripture games in the morning after the big kids leave for school.

Benefits of Scripture Game Time for Young Children:

• The game helps develop their reading and comprehension skills. If there is a verse they don't understand, take time to discuss the meaning of the verse before moving on.
• The children are awake and alert during the entire scripture game.
• They are searching the scriptures for answers and looking carefully at the verses.
• They are excited when they find answers.
• There is success for everyone, and its okay to ask for help.
• They look forward to playing a game with Mom or Dad everyday.
• It's fun, but when they reach 50 points the game is over. They are not ready to stop, and are excited to come back to the game tomorrow.

Don't play the same game everyday. It keeps things interesting. We will be posting other games ideas. You can use the Book of Mormon Trivia Questions with many different types of activities.

Book of Mormon Trivia - Alma 17

With preteen children, we want to help them get familiar with the stories in the Book of Mormon by doing a variety of activities. My children love to play games with me, so we're going to make scripture study into a game.

Book of Mormon Trivia is a fun way to read the scriptures. You can read these questions in order, or you can mix up the questions. Start by keeping the questions in order. Once the children know the story, you can mix up the questions and combine questions from different Book of Mormon chapters.

I included the scripture reference so they know the context of the question. When they see the answer is in Alma chapter 17, they should know this chapter's basic story line. If they don't know the answer to a question, have them look it up; then have them read the verse aloud. This will help them in their ability to read and comprehend the Book of Mormon. We want them to have fun and not stress because they don't know an answer. When they're ready for the challenge of knowing the answers by memory, we can incorporate that into the game.

You can play a game using these questions, or you can use questions your family creates. Next week I'll post a few different games you can play, or have fun creating your own game.  

Creating the questions and game might be interesting for one of your older children. It all depends on the child. Ideas that work for one child might not work for another child. That's okay.
